Frequently asked questions – Important information about health insurance for pensioners

Under what conditions can I get insured with Audi BKK as a pensioner?

If you receive or have applied for a pension from the statutory pension insurance (regardless of type) and generally meet the conditions for a pension, you will be mandatorily insured in the health insurance for retirees (KVdR) if you meet the requirements. The prerequisite is that you fulfill the so-called prior insurance period. This is the case if you were publicly insured for at least 90 % of the second half of your working life (the period from when you first started working until the day you apply for a pension). All periods of membership or family insurance in public health insurance are taken into account.

Example:

Hans M. started his working life 40 years ago. He has now filed a pension application with the responsible pension insurance provider. The 90 % rule applies to the second period of 20 years. If Hans M. was publicly insured as a member or family member for at least 18 years (90 %) of this period, he meets the requirements for KVdR. If Hans M. was not publicly insured for more than 2 years (10 %) during the calculation period, a voluntary membership with Audi BKK as a retiree may be an option for him.

Are childcare periods counted towards prior insurance periods?

Since August 1, 2017, there has been a change in the calculation of prior insurance periods for mandatory insurance in the KVdR. Additionally, three years per child are now credited.

The credit is given to both parents. For adoptive, step, and foster children, the three years can be credited to both their biological parents and their adoptive, step, and foster parents, provided the children were not yet 18 years old at the time of adoption or recognition as a stepchild.

It does not matter who actually cared for or raised the child and for how long. This also includes cases where the child dies before the age of three or if employment was interrupted for childcare or raising the child. However, only children born or recognized as adoptive, step, or foster children by the day of the pension application can be considered.

Since the law does not provide for a transitional or cutoff date, people who applied for a pension before August 1, 2017, and were not mandatorily insured as retirees due to missing prior insurance periods can also gain access to the KVdR. The mandatory insurance then begins on August 1, 2017.

Example:

Start of the first employment: 01.05.1973

Date of pension application: 01.04.2017

Start of the second half of this period: 17.04.1995

Necessary prior insurance period in the second half of the period (90% of this period): 19 years, 9 months, 10 days

For example, during the review in April 2017, only 18 years of insurance in public health insurance were credited, so the requirements for KVdR were not met. The pension applicant has a biological child (born 01.01.1980), so from August 1, 2017, an additional 3 years will be credited to the previously considered 18 years.

Result: As of August 1, 2017, the requirements for KVdR are met.

What is the contribution rate for retiree insurance?

In public health insurance, a general contribution rate of 14.6 % applies. The pension insurance provider and you each pay half of this amount, or 7.3 %. In addition, there is the individual supplementary contribution of Audi BKK.

Audi BKK will charge a supplementary contribution rate of 1.0 %. This supplementary contribution is also paid half by you and half by the pension insurance provider.

The average supplementary contribution rate of health insurance funds is 1.7 % (as of 2024).

The basis for calculating your contributions is statutory pensions, pension payments, and other income (foreign pension, earned income), but not exceeding the contribution assessment limit of 5,175 euros per month (as of 2024). Your responsible pension insurance provider handles the payment of contributions from the statutory pension to the health insurance fund.

Example:

Klaus T. receives a monthly statutory pension of 1,000.00 euros.

The health insurance contribution to be paid from the pension (15.6 % of 1,000 euros) is 156.00 euros.

The pension insurance provider covers half of this, or 78.00 euros. The other half is paid by Klaus T.

The pension insurance provider withholds this amount from the pension and forwards it along with its share to the health fund.
