Frequently asked questions - interesting facts about starting your trainee and health insurance

How does the first day work? As a dual student, do I need my own statutory health insurance? Can trainees like me simply stay in the family insurance scheme? Your employment contract has been signed, but you still have a thousand questions? Relax, many things will be clarified on the first day of training. Our FAQs with the most important information will help you with the most urgent questions about open to-dos, family insurance & co. Let's get started.

Do I need health insurance for my trainee?

Yes, as soon as you receive a salary, you cannot remain covered by family insurance during a dual study program. Unlike students who only attend a (technical) university, you also complete a large practical part and are therefore considered to be employed for vocational training purposes. As long as you do not earn more than 325 euros per month, your employer pays the contributions alone. This means that you also need your own health insurance for a dual study program.

I am not a trainee, but am doing a dual study program. Do I also need my own health insurance?

Yes, as soon as you receive a salary, you cannot remain covered by family insurance during a dual study program. Unlike students who only attend a (technical) university, you also complete a large practical part and are therefore considered to be employed for vocational training purposes. As long as you do not earn more than 325 euros per month, your employer pays the contributions alone. This means that you also need your own health insurance for a dual study program.

I was previously covered by family insurance. Can I stay on family insurance during my training?

As soon as you receive remuneration in your new employment relationship as a trainee, you must take out your own health insurance and are therefore no longer covered by your parents' family insurance. Exceptions are vocational training courses that are not subject to social insurance contributions. Here it is quite possible that trainees can remain covered by family insurance. To be more precise, this means that you can remain covered by family insurance, for example, if you are only studying at school, as you are not earning any money during this time.

Can I change my health insurance provider at short notice?

You've already made your choice, but now you've found a better offer? What many people don't know: You can change your decision and choose a different health insurance company up to two weeks after the start of your training. As a rule, you are bound to your insurance for twelve months. After that, you can change your health insurance provider at any time with a notice period of two months. If the insurance is continued with the same health insurance company, there is no 12-month commitment period.

How high are the social security contributions that are deducted from my salary as a trainee?

If you receive a training allowance, you will be subject to compulsory health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance. This means that a statutory contribution rate is automatically deducted from your salary and paid into these insurance schemes. But how high are these contributions?

The amount of contributions at a glance:

Health insurance: 14. 6 %- plus Audi BKK's additional contribution of 1.0 %
Long-term care insurance: 3.4 % (If you are already 23 years old or older and have no children, you pay a contribution surcharge of 0.6 percent for long-term care insurance, i.e. a total of 4.0 %).
Pension insurance: 18.6 %
Unemployment insurance: 2.6 %

You and your employer each pay half of these amounts.

First day of training: How do I prepare myself?

Well rested: Try to go to bed early before your first day of training so that you start the next morning fit and motivated.

Breakfast for a champion: Breakfast is not considered the most important meal of the day for nothing - and a growling stomach only distracts you and you lack the necessary energy.

I'm packing my suitcase ... : ... and take a pen and paper with you - it always makes a good impression if you make notes on your new tasks and the most important information in the first few days.

Be on time at the start: Plan enough time for your journey to the training location so that delays on buses and trains or traffic jams don't throw you off course.

Dress to impress: What you wear depends on your job, of course. If you are not wearing prescribed work clothes, make sure you have a clean, neat style.

Ask, ask, ask: On the first day in particular, you will learn a lot about your tasks and your training company. So don't just take notes, but also ask directly if you don't understand something.
