Frequently asked questions – What you need to know before starting university

Got questions about health insurance for students? Whether you’re wondering if you need your own insurance or can stay on family insurance, our FAQs cover everything you need to know before starting your studies.

My studies are starting. How can I insure myself as a student?

Are you wondering which health insurance is right for you and your needs? If you are a student, you can insure yourself with Audi BKK as follows, depending on your age, marital status and personal situation: either via family insurance or via student health insurance (KVdS).

Via family insurance

As a student, you can remain on your parents' family insurance free of charge until the end of your 25th year. The prerequisite is that your total monthly income does not exceed 505.00 euros (as of 2024) - for mini-jobbers, the income limit is instead the applicable mini-job limit. The entitlement to family insurance may be extended by the period of compulsory statutory service or various voluntary services. If this is the case for you, we will be happy to advise you. Please submit a certificate of the type and duration for verification. If you are already married, free family insurance is possible through your spouse. In this case, there is no age limit. However, your own monthly income must not exceed this limit.

About student health insurance (KVdS)

If you are no longer entitled to family insurance, you will become a member of the student health and long-term care insurance (KVdS). The prerequisite for this is that you are enrolled at a state or state-recognized university. KVdS ends when you complete your studies, but no later than the semester in which you turn 30. In exceptional cases, such as prolonged illness or the birth and care of a child, health insurance as a student with Audi BKK is also possible beyond your 30th birthday. Even if you have met the entry requirements for a second-chance course of study, you can take out health insurance with Audi BKK as a student after your 30th birthday.

How much is the health insurance contribution for students?

Since 01.10.2024, the monthly contribution to health insurance has been 95.93 euros including the individual supplementary contribution and since 01.10.2024 29.07 euros for long-term care insurance. The total contribution is therefore 125.00 euros

The contribution to health insurance is calculated from the BAföG requirement rate (= 855.00 euros) and the contribution rate (incl. 1.0 % supplementary contribution rate) of 11.22%.

The contribution rate for long-term care insurance is 3.4 %. If you have no children and are at least 23 years old, you will have to pay an additional 0.60 % childless supplement for long-term care insurance (34.20 euros instead of 29.07 euros). From July 1, 2023, the contribution rate for parents with more than one child will be reduced. Contribution reductions of 0.25 % will be introduced from the 2nd to the 5th child. These reductions will apply until the respective child reaches the age of 25.

The contributions must be paid in advance for the entire semester. If you prefer to pay monthly, you are welcome to give us a SEPA direct debit mandate and we will debit the contributions due from your specified account each month.

By the way: If you receive BAföG, you can apply for monthly subsidies for health insurance and long-term care insurance from your local BAföG office.

I would like to work alongside my studies in the future. Are part-time jobs exempt from insurance and contributions?

Secondary employment can be exempt from insurance and contributions to health, long-term care and unemployment insurance if the employment is limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week (with the exception of semester breaks: Here the weekly working hours may exceed this limit). Or it is an interim internship during your studies that is prescribed by the study or examination regulations. Employment that is limited from the outset to a maximum of three months or 70 working days per calendar year is also exempt from insurance and contributions to health, long-term care and unemployment insurance.

Please note that all jobs with a weekly working time of more than 20 hours within a year are added together. These may not exceed a total of 26 weeks per year. The amount of earnings is irrelevant.

However, free family insurance is only possible if your total monthly income does not regularly exceed 505.00 euros (as of 2024) - for mini-jobbers, the income limit is instead the applicable mini-job limit.

If your employment is only short-term (maximum three months or 70 working days per calendar year), this does not affect your family insurance.

By the way: Unlike health, long-term care and unemployment insurance, students are generally subject to pension insurance.

How am I insured if I am doing a dual study program?

Dual students are compulsorily insured for health, nursing care, pension and unemployment insurance, as they have the status of a trainee for social insurance purposes. The prerequisite is that they receive a salary or a study grant or scholarship. Students who do not receive such remuneration are insured as students in the KVdS via a health insurance fund.
